  • Practice Description

    The Site VP for Medical Affairs works collaboratively with the Acute Care Operations team and hospital leadership triad partners to lead achievement of goals at the site and system level. Provides leadership and oversight at the hospital site in regards to medical staff, clinical quality, and physician relations. Partners with system leadership, service line, and domain leadership to implement system initiatives at the local hospital. Ensures the development of medical practice strategies and policies that are consistent with system standards and supportive of Fairview’s mission, vision, values and strategic plan. Provides support and leadership for system initiatives when required.

      

    Job Expectations:

    • Ensures strategic planning, coordination and coverage of medical staff services and programs at the hospital necessary to deliver high quality, cost effective patient care based on a system of care approach across all service lines, entities and departments.
    • Partners with site VP of Operations and Chief Nursing Officer to ensure daily operational excellence at the hospital, including development and management of strategic planning and annual operational and capital budgets.
    • Actively promotes, prioritizes, participates in, and works to implement improvement efforts to achieve measurable enhancement in outcomes for patient safety, quality, clinical excellence, patient satisfaction, and financial performance of the hospital.
    • Supports site involvement in clinical improvement priorities set by system quality and safety, service line and domains, serving as a role model and champion for clinical quality.
    • Maintains responsibility for administrative oversight of medical staff functions at the site including credentialing, peer review, patient experience, risk management, medical education, and research.
    • Provides medical leadership for Medical Staff Services personnel.
    • Provides leadership, coaching, and serves as a role model for lean leadership utilizing principles and practices of the Fairview Operating System.
    • Responsible for ensuring that physician, non-physician providers and other authorized practitioners receive and maintain appropriate credentialing and privileging.
    • Monitors site participation, reporting and problem resolution consistent with Fairview professional and peer review processes.
    • Addresses problem performance by members of the medical staff, in a fair, timely, and constructive manner, in accordance with the bylaws of the hospital.
    • Ensures that community and Fairview standards/protocols of medical practice are maintained and consistently utilized, working with other physician leaders to maintain high standards.
    • Ensures the provision of quality health care and excellent patient satisfaction are consistently maintained.
    • Maintains knowledge of, and complies with, all relevant laws, regulations, policies, procedures and standards.
    • Provides medical leadership for government, regulatory and compliance visits and surveys.
    • Coordinates compliance with Joint Commission and other regulatory standards for medical staff, and actively participates in corporate compliance program(s) and departmental compliance activities.
    • Assures adherence of medical staff to hospital and medical staff by-laws, rules and regulations.
    • Serves as primary resource to hospital medical staff to assure two-way communication and medical staff input in the development of hospital policies.
    • Facilitate communication between employed, independent and contracted medical staff members and the administration.
    • Provides Leadership for MEC and medical staff committees in conjunction with the Chief of Staff.
    • Serves as visible representative and/or spokesperson for the hospital on system committees, in the local community, and with medical organizations, government, and media.
    • Participates in a variety of internal and external venues to ensure current best practice in healthcare delivery.
    • Establishes and nurtures relationships with Board, community members, medical and administrative staff, and senior executive colleagues across the system.
    • Serves as a liaison and channels communication between the Board and its communities, medical and administrative staff.
    • Serves as liaison to primary and specialty medical groups to ensure entity/care system activities are planned and functioning in a manner that supports community needs.
    • Helps to align the local hospital with system Quality & Safety, Customer Service, People Engagement, Efficiency and Research & Education goals.
    • Works with the Patient Relations staff to address concerns from patients, their families and friends, regarding quality of care and interpersonal relations with the medical staff.
    • Provides leadership and administrative coverage for the local hospital, in the event that the COO of Acute Care Hospitals, CNO or VPO are not available.

    Qualifications

    • Graduate of an accredited ACGME or AOA training program.
    • Board Certified/Board Prepared with the American Board of Medical Specialties or Amercian Board of Osteopathic Specialties.
    • Licensed or ability to obtain Minnesota Board of Medical Practice Licensure.
    • Ability to obtain and /or maintain DEA certification for the State of Minnesota.
    • 10 years of medical practice, including administrative and/or managerial experience.
    • Meet threshold criteria/qualifications for Credentialing and Privileges.

    Preferred Qualification:

    • Advanced management training preferred such as MBA, MMM, MHA.
    • Currently on staff at a Fairview or HealthEast Hospital.
